Chris and Tracy — Chracy Travels — are part of our community and have travelled across North America in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 170 AWD with a custom Vancini conversion. This conversation captures what truly helped them, what they’d gladly repeat, and what they wish they’d known from day one.

The interview
Vancini: If you could go back to the beginning, what do you wish you’d known before starting van life?
Chracy Travels: That waiting can be preparation. The pandemic delayed our Sprinter by two years. Frustrating, yes — but it gave us time to research, learn from others, and define exactly how we wanted to live in the van. We set off far more prepared than we ever expected.
Vancini: What was the toughest moment on the road, and how did you handle it?
Chracy Travels: A check-engine light on the base vehicle came on when we were two and a half hours from the nearest Mercedes dealer. We stayed calm and drove carefully to Albuquerque. After several hours of diagnostics, we carried on at no cost. The big lesson: have a Plan B and understand your systems so a scare doesn’t become a crisis. (Vancini note: the alert was part of the factory vehicle system; our work is the custom conversion.)
Vancini: Most magical or unexpected moment?
Chracy Travels: Baja. The word barely covers it — wild beaches and whales breaching just offshore. It’s only fair to add the roads are narrow, shoulderless, and pockmarked with potholes. Slow down; the landscape does the rest.

If you’re heading to Baja, think in three verbs: anticipate, adjust, enjoy. Anticipate stops and overnights; adjust tire pressure and speed to the surface; enjoy what can’t be measured — the blue of the water, the quiet, and the memories that linger.

Vancini: Any beginner mistake you’d turn into advice?
Chracy Travels: Believing level indicators tell the whole story. They’re a guide, not an oracle. Peace of mind comes from habits: a quick end-of-day check, listening to the flow when draining, and noting rough consumption.
Vancini: For anyone building with Vancini, what’s your straight-to-the-point advice?
Chracy Travels: Do your research and write it down. The clearer your routines (climate, cooking, remote work, sports, pets), the sharper the build. Layout, electrical, climate control, storage, and safety all click into place when real life is on the table from day one.
Calm can be designed: accessible systems, clear panels, easy purges, a layout that works with your routine, and an electrical system with sensible headroom. When the foundation is well thought out, the unexpected is easier to handle.
Vancini: What daily habit changed the most once you moved into the van?
Chracy Travels: Simplifying. We went from very home-oriented to embracing “less stuff, more life.” A well-designed van reduces friction and gives you presence — breakfasts with a view, breezy naps, and the feeling that everything that matters comes along for the ride.
Vancini: How was the emotional adjustment? Any fear when overnighting?
Chracy Travels: We realized everything seems scarier from home. In practice, we didn’t feel afraid where we parked. When your home on wheels feels yours and trustworthy, the world feels different.
