Thermal insulation: creating a refuge from the cold
Good insulation is the foundation of a warm winter van. The metal body panels lose heat quickly, so we need to “bundle up” the van from the inside. At Vancini, we use 3M Thinsulate exclusively as our insulation material throughout the ceiling, walls, crevices, and door panels—essentially every reachable cavity inside the van. Depending on a client’s needs, we’ll apply one or two layers of Thinsulate (and you can never go wrong with two for maximum winter performance).
Before installing insulation, we always apply sound-deadening material (Kilmat) to the walls, ceiling, and wheel wells. This dramatically reduces road noise and also enhances the effectiveness of the insulation. Last but not least, we also use spray foam inside the narrow factory ceiling supports where Thinsulate cannot physically fit. These channels are commonly overlooked, but spray-foaming them helps eliminate thermal bridging and reduces cold pockets overhead.
A commonly overlooked area in many conversions is the overhead headliner shelf at the front of the van. This curved, spacious area can leak a surprising amount of heat if left untreated. We make sure to insulate this front cap thoroughly with Thinsulate so warm air isn’t escaping from the cab.
When it comes to windows, glass is always the weakest thermal point. We recommend using insulated window covers for every exposed window surface (windshield, cab windows, slider, rear doors). Both soft insulated covers and dual-pane acrylic windows are solid winter options—and if you’re planning extreme cold-weather travel, dual-pane acrylic windows outperform standard glass by a wide margin. The floor is another major source of heat loss. In our standard builds (unless a client opts for hydronic heated floors, which we’ll discuss later), we use a 1″ foamboard subfloor paired with a 5/8″ Baltic birch overlay. This creates a stable, insulated base before the finish floor is installed. Many builders from warmer climates overlook subfloor insulation entirely—but in Canadian winters, this upgrade is huge. It’s the difference between waking up with warm feet or stepping onto a freezing surface first thing in the morning.
At Vancini, we design every build to act as a full thermal shell. In The Pinery build, for example, metal pillars were upholstered with thermal materials to eliminate cold bridges, and a proper insulated subfloor (1″ foamboard + 5/8″ Baltic birch overlay) was installed. The result is an efficient “thermal box”: the interior stays warm longer while using less energy.
Structural Protection & Flooring
Before diving into insulation and flooring, it’s important to mention that all exterior hardware we install is made from top-grade stainless steel, and any exterior accessories we fabricate (ladders, racks, boxes, etc.) are built from aluminum and then powder-coated. This means that even if the powder coating ever chips, the material underneath will not rust like mild steel—a crucial advantage for Canadian winters where road salt is relentless.
The van’s structure—its chassis, body and floor—faces very harsh conditions in winter. In addition to insulating the interior, we also need to think about the integrity and protection of the vehicle itself.
A first step is to protect the underbody. Apply an anti-corrosion treatment on the underbody and inside cavities: road salt can cause rust very quickly. An undercoating applied to the chassis before winter will protect the structure from water, salt, and gravel. It’s also a good idea to inspect and seal any cracks or openings in the body where water or cold air could get in. Check door seals, window seals, and roof vent gaskets; replace or repair any that are worn so the van stays watertight.
The floor deserves special mention. Besides the thermal insulation already mentioned, think about water resistance and durability. Constantly stepping in with snowy boots and melting snow can soak the interior. That’s why we use marine-grade vinyl flooring such as Lonseal—a premium option that is fully waterproof, extremely durable, and available in many colours, textures, and aesthetic finishes. The textured options offer excellent grip (great for pets or wet conditions), and all variants hold up exceptionally well to winter moisture. Whether a client chooses Lonseal or another marine-grade vinyl, the performance is equally strong; it simply comes down to visual style.
Protecting cabinetry at floor level:
Anywhere cabinetry meets the floor, we apply 3M Marine-Grade Silicone to seal the base. This prevents water from seeping underneath cabinets and eliminates the risk of warping if you track in snow, spill water, or step inside with muddy boots. Since the Lonseal floor is already waterproof, this added perimeter seal ensures that moisture stays completely contained on the surface where it can be easily wiped away.
At Vancini Conversions, moisture resistance is built into every layer of the interior. Our cabinetry faces use laminated paneling that we manufacture in-house, built on a Baltic birch core for strength and long-term stability. Inside the cabinets, surfaces are UV-coated/lacquered for additional protection against humidity and temperature fluctuations. These materials prevent swelling, mould, and warping—critical details for a van that will face Canadian winters.
Heating and ventilation: steady warmth
If insulation is the coat, heating is the warm heart of your winter van. A reliable heater is what makes the difference between enjoying a winter getaway and suffering through it.
The best option is a fuel-powered parking heater connected to the vehicle’s fuel tank (diesel or gasoline, depending on your van) so you don’t have to rely on an external power source. These heaters use very little fuel and can keep the interior comfortable even in harsh Canadian winter conditions—but only when the rest of your van has been properly insulated and winter-prepared as outlined in this guide. At Vancini, we exclusively use Eberspächer (Espar) heaters, known for their reliability, quiet operation, and efficiency in sub-zero environments.
Before winter arrives, always book a heater service appointment to ensure the system is running properly and ready for the cold season. This is especially important if your heater has not been used over the summer—catching an issue early is far better than discovering it at –20°C during a trip.
It’s also important to have a reliable thermostat or control panel. Most modern Eberspächer units come with programmable thermostats or controllers like the EasyStart, which let you easily set temperatures and schedules. Imagine coming back from a snowshoe hike to find your van already warm. Some advanced systems even offer remote app-based control. Whatever controller you use, make sure it’s mounted where it can measure a representative interior temperature—not next to a door or drafty surface.
At the same time, don’t forget ventilation. It may sound contradictory (“Ventilate in the middle of winter?”), but renewing the air is essential for managing condensation and maintaining safe oxygen levels. A good practice is to crack a roof vent (a fan-equipped roof hatch) and a lower window slightly to create airflow. Roof fans with adjustable speeds (like the Maxxair MaxxFan) are excellent tools: on low speed they can pull out steam from cooking or breathing without significantly cooling the van. Many models have rain-proof covers, allowing for safe operation even during snowfall. Ventilating for a few minutes after cooking or before bed dramatically reduces condensation buildup.
As for types of heaters, avoid those that produce moisture or consume oxygen from the interior. Portable propane heaters generate water vapour and require heavy ventilation—they can serve as an emergency backup, but never as your primary heat source. A fixed, exterior-venting Eberspächer heater is the safest and most reliable option in winter. And because it runs from your vehicle’s fuel tank, there’s no need to deal with propane cylinders—which also vaporize poorly in extreme cold.
Finally, think safety and backup. Always carry working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors (with spare batteries). In small, sealed spaces they’re essential. And if you’re heading to remote areas or extremely low temperatures, consider a backup heat source: a small electric heater (if shore power is available) or, in a true emergency, briefly using the vehicle’s engine and cabin heater for warmth. The key is to never be in a situation where you’re left without heat.

Rixen’s uses Eberspächer heaters at the core of their kits and expands the system into a unified thermal ecosystem capable of providing cabin air heat, domestic hot water, hydronic floor heat, residual engine heat capture, and even engine pre-heat capabilities. In The Sleepy Hollow build, for example, we installed a Rixen’s hydronic system to create a highly efficient, winter-ready heating setup capable of handling extreme temperatures. Combined with proper insulation and ventilation, systems like these keep the van warm, safe, and functional no matter how cold the weather turns.

Before diving into specifics, it’s important to understand a core winter reality:
Lithium batteries are superior in every way—capacity, lifespan, weight, performance—but they cannot accept a charge when they are below freezing (0°C) or, in some cases, even below +5°C. This is the number-one thing new winter van owners overlook. If your van is sitting unheated in winter and your batteries drop below freezing, the internal BMS will block all incoming charge.
That means:
- If the sun hits your solar panels → no charge
- If you start driving and your DC-DC charger activates → no charge
- If temps drop to around –10°C → many batteries will shut themselves off entirely
More than one winter traveler has ended up outside with a hair dryer on the battery bank just to warm it up enough to take charge again. For this reason, winterizing isn’t only about protecting your plumbing—it’s also about keeping your battery system within safe operating temps.
Extreme cold hits your electrical system harder than you think. At 0°C, a typical battery can lose up to 30% of its usable capacity, and at lower temperatures its ability to deliver current drops even further. A system sized for summer may fall short in winter if you don’t prepare properly.
Batteries.
Check the condition of your house battery before winter. If it’s old or undersized, consider upgrading to a larger-capacity lithium bank. Many lithium (LiFePO₄) batteries include internal heaters or thermal management systems—these are ideal for Canadian winters. Just remember: they must be kept above freezing to accept a charge. This can be achieved through integrated heaters or by mounting the batteries inside insulated, heated compartments within the living area.
Charging and power sources.
Because winter brings fewer sun hours and lower sun angles, solar production drops significantly. Snow and frost can also block solar entirely, so clear panels regularly. Even with perfect conditions, expect solar to underperform in winter.
This creates more reliance on alternator charging. A Victron 50A Orion XS DC-DC charger is essential for safe, reliable alternator charging. For clients doing heavy winter travel or powering large battery banks, we also offer high-output alternator upgrades capable of providing up to 280A of charging—allowing you to refill large banks in just a couple hours of driving.
A compact generator is optional, but can be useful for extremely long stationary periods. If your van has a shore power inlet, use it whenever available to top up batteries and prevent the bank from starting a trip “cold.”
Component location.
All sensitive components—batteries, inverters, controllers, breakers—should be installed inside the insulated, conditioned living space whenever possible. If they must go in a utility compartment, that compartment must be insulated and temperature regulated.
At Vancini, we integrate temperature sensors inside our electrical and plumbing compartments. These sensors communicate with automatic fans that draw warm cabin air in or exhaust warm air out depending on what’s needed. This maintains a safe internal temperature so batteries and plumbing stay above freezing without wasting energy.
The Vancini approach.
We design every electrical system with Canadian winter in mind. Many of our advanced builds include 400Ah to 900Ah heated lithium banks, which maintain their own internal temperature so charging remains safe in freezing weather. All major components are installed inside insulated, temperature-controlled enclosures—as seen in builds like Ram Falls, where both electrical and plumbing systems sit inside heated cabinets.
To maximize autonomy, we typically pair:
- 300–700W of solar,
- a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger, and
- optional high-output alternator systems (up to 280A) for rapid charging in winter.
This ensures that even during long, dark January stretches, your van remains warm, powered, and functional.
Electrical reliability is our top priority: a van shut down by frozen batteries or a dead system is the last thing you want in a Canadian snowstorm.
Water and plumbing: making sure only your ice cubes freeze
Running water in winter is possible—but only if you plan for freezing temperatures. Having running water in a van during Canadian winter is a luxury that demands careful preparation. The obvious enemy: tanks or pipes freezing and expanding, which can lead to cracks, leaks, or total system failure.
Tank location.
The best strategy is to keep water tanks inside the heated area of the van. Many layouts place the fresh tank over the wheel arch or inside cabinetry. A 20–30 gallon internal tank stays above freezing thanks to cabin heat. Vancini builds almost always use this setup—many Sprinter conversions we’ve completed run 27–32 gallon internal tanks tucked into insulated cabinetry, safe from sub-zero temperatures.
If your van has underbody tanks (common in larger RVs), they should be drained in winter or heavily insulated and heated. Otherwise, freezing is almost guaranteed during cold snaps.
Draining and smart use.
If you plan to park the van without heat for several days—like during a deep cold snap—drain the entire water system: the tank, lines, and water heater. Add non-toxic RV antifreeze to P-traps to prevent damage.
Some DIY or rental campers rely on water jugs in extreme cold, but:
In a properly built Vancini conversion, you should never need to switch to jugs.
When all the steps in this guide are followed—proper insulation, heating strategies, Thinsulate coverage, heated compartments, and correct electrical management—your plumbing remains fully functional even in extreme Canadian temperatures.
Water heater.
Hot water in winter is absolutely possible—but not all systems are equal.
- 12V/110V water heaters are suitable for simple builds or clients who only need enough hot water for a quick dish wash or a very short rinse. These units are compact and efficient but not ideal for continuous hot showers.
- For vans that want true on-demand hot water, long showers, or multi-use heating integration, we highly recommend a hydronic-based system—such as a Rixen’s system—which heats water using a diesel-fired heat exchanger. This provides ultra-consistent hot water, works flawlessly in sub-zero climates, and avoids the complications of external propane boilers.
More often than not, Vancini installs Rixen’s hydronic systems in four-season builds because of their reliability, freeze protection, and ability to integrate seamlessly with cabin heating.
The Vancini approach to freeze-proof plumbing.
We place the entire plumbing circuit inside the insulated living area whenever possible—fresh tank, pump, filters, valves. Critical components are grouped into temperature-controlled compartments, as seen in builds like Ram Falls, where both electrical and plumbing systems sit inside heated, sensor-regulated cabinets.
Just like in our electrical systems, these compartments feature temperature sensors paired with automatic fans that move warm interior air in—or vent excess heat out—to maintain safe internal temperatures without wasting energy.
One important reminder (tying back to the previous section):
Even if your plumbing system is fully protected, your electrical system still needs heat. You can drain your tanks all you want, but lithium batteries cannot take a charge when they’re below freezing. Your heater must remain active to keep the electrical bay warm—otherwise, the system will shut down and refuse charging until warmed back up.
Our goal is simple:
You should be able to wash dishes, cook, and shower in January without worrying whether something has frozen within your van.

Snow gear, tires and exterior safety
Once the interior is winter-ready, the outside of your van has to match it. Here we’re talking about tires, traction, visibility and overall road safety. Let’s go over the key points:
Winter tires (or the right all-terrain choice).
In a perfect world, everyone would run a dedicated winter-only tire—but most van owners don’t, especially those traveling year-round. Instead, a strong all-terrain tire with excellent winter performance is often the best all-around choice.
From our testing and client feedback, BF Goodrich KO3 all-terrains perform exceptionally well in snow, offering a great balance of grip, durability and year-round usability. For anyone traveling regularly in winter conditions, KO3s are a proven upgrade.
If you do choose true winter-only tires with the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol, that’s fine—but for the vast majority of vanlifers, a quality all-terrain tire is the more practical choice. Just remember:
- Tire pressure drops in cold weather → check regularly
- Chains are still worth carrying (mandatory in some mountain passes)
- Practice installing chains before you actually need them
Suspension and ride height.
When your van is heavily loaded, you lose ground clearance. A reinforced suspension kit helps restore ride height, improve stability, and reduce scraping against snowbanks or ice chunks. Many Vancini clients choose Van Compass suspension upgrades for their AWD or 4×4 vans. Combined with proper tires, this dramatically improves winter capability.
Visibility and lighting.
Winter means long nights and unpredictable storms. Auxiliary lighting—LED bars, fog lights, and long-range driving lights—helps significantly in rural or unlit areas. We’ve installed 50″ light bars and LED pods on many off-road–oriented builds.
A few practical tips:
- Keep headlights and taillights clean
- Carry spare bulbs
- Some people use heated wiper blade strips or simply lift their wipers when parked
- A headlamp is invaluable for nighttime tasks like clearing snow or installing chains
Recovery gear.
A proper winter kit should include:
- Folding snow shovel
- Booster cables (cold kills batteries fast)
- Tow straps
- Sand/snow traction boards
- Warm gloves
- Ice scraper
- First-aid kit
- Emergency blankets
For remote winter travel, a front-mounted winch can be a lifesaver. In extreme builds like The Sleepy Hollow, we’ve integrated winches so clients can self-recover on snowy forest roads if needed.
Engine and fluids.
Use winter-rated engine oil and coolant rated down to –40°C if you’re heading north. Always run –40°C windshield washer fluid—standard –20°C blends freeze in the Prairies and Rockies.
If your van doesn’t have a block heater, consider adding one. In –30°C conditions, it can be the difference between starting and not starting. When camping in very cold temps, plug in your block heater for a couple hours before driving.
Camper exterior.
A few exterior notes to avoid winter damage:
- Awnings should be kept closed—snow load can damage them
- Exterior ladders do not need to be closed
- Keep solar panels clean—snow can completely block charging
- Wash the underbody after salted-road driving
- Carry lock de-icer to prevent frozen doors

Condensation and humidity control: goodbye fogged windows and mould
Condensation is the silent enemy of winter vanlife. It comes from your breath, cooking, ambient humidity, and the moisture you bring in on wet clothes. When warm, humid air hits cold surfaces—windows, metal, uninsulated pockets—it condenses into droplets that can freeze or, worse, cause hidden moisture buildup over time. So how do you manage it?
1. Regular ventilation.
Yes, you’ll lose a bit of heat when ventilating—but that’s a small price compared to damp bedding and dripping walls. Open the roof fan for a few minutes while cooking (boiling water creates a lot of steam). When sleeping, crack a window slightly opposite the roof fan to keep airflow moving. Many vanlifers swear that cracking the front windows ~1 cm and running the MaxxFan on low almost eliminates overnight condensation.
Experiment with fan speeds and window openings to find what works best in different temperatures.
2. Tackle humidity at the source.
Minimize excess moisture whenever possible.
- Remove wet jackets and boots and store them in the rear “garage” or in sealed bags rather than drying them in the living space.
- For extremely wet clothing, use a laundromat or drying room when available.
- When cooking, keep lids on pots and run the fan.
- Avoid long moisture-heavy cooking sessions indoors when you can (soups, pasta, boiling).
The less moisture you introduce, the less you need to manage.
3. Check and maintain seals.
Before winter, inspect door seals, roof vents, windows, and any previous leak points. Winter amplifies small leaks—snow melts, refreezes, and finds its way into weak spots.
If you begin to notice condensation forming in certain areas, remember this:
a good dry diesel/gas heater will actively remove moisture from the air, unlike propane heaters, which actually add moisture. Proper heating dramatically reduces condensation inside the van.
Monitor typical risk zones like:
- behind cabinets
- under the bed
- corners and lower wall areas
Touch surfaces periodically and watch for signs of moisture or mould so you can address issues early.
How Vancini prevents condensation.
Our builds combat humidity using thoughtful material choices and ventilation design. We use moisture-resistant materials—bi-laminated marine plywood, polymers in vulnerable zones, and properly finished surfaces—so if condensation does form, it doesn’t damage the van’s structure.
Every Vancini build includes at least one powered vent (MaxxFan), and we educate clients on how to use it effectively even in winter.
